Correction: Billy E. Self, Jr.

I discussed this with a friend last night after the Kansas game: Bill Self's full name. What is it? The picture from the last post came tagged "Billy E. Self." I thought it was a way of being cute, since Bill looked like a giddy schoolboy after that Davidson win.

But no, my friend told me, that is his real middle initial. Further, Bill's given first name isn't "William," it is "Billy," like any good Oklahoman or Texan male. A Google search didn't turn up any answers, but a search of the 2006 Douglas County, Kan., property valuations, for the term "Billy Self," sure did.

I'm pretty sure there aren't a lot of other Bill Selfs owning million-dollar homes in Lawrence, Kan. We also speculated on what the "E." stands for. It can't be Dale, Wade, or Bubba, for obvious reasons. It could be just the letter E. Definitely not Edmund. The consensus pick is Earl, a good, God-fearing NASCAR name.

Obambi the Mac, Billary the PC

The NYTimes has a story comparing the Web sites of the Dems still seeking the nomination. Obama's design is so much more visually pleasing and integrated. And they quote Prof. Lessig on the candidates' positions:

On the big Internet issues like copyright, Lawrence Lessig, a Stanford law professor who is supporting Mr. Obama, said there was “not a big difference on paper” between the two Democrats. Both tend to favor the users of the Internet over those who “own the pipes.” He is impressed by Mr. Obama’s proposal to “make all public government data available to everybody to use as they wish.”

In the long run, however, Mr. Lessig believes that it is the ability to motivate the electorate that matters, not simple matters of style. And he’s a Mac user from way back.

I met Pat Oliphant Thursday night

after the National Archives' panel including Ann Telnaes, Clay Bennett, Matt Davies, and moderated by Stephen Hess. I was enthused, Mr. Oliphant less so. He just let me say my bit, smiled, and politely signed the book I bought. He sketched Puck the penguin.
